Gaucín seen from the northern flank of El Hacho

From the petrol station head north along Calle Camino del Montoro. After 50m turn left at a sign ‘Sendero del Hacho, 6.1km’ and pick up a path that runs just to the left of a line of eucalyptus trees. The path climbs steeply up between two fences, past groves of olives and almonds. Blue waymarking marks the way at this point.

Ahead you’ll be able to spot the path you’ll soon be following, cutting across the northern flank of El Hacho. When you reach a fork keep left and continue to climb. Shortly the path swings hard to the right and runs on, now parallel to a track just above you, before passing just beneath a large, statuesque rock where it divides. Take the left fork and continue climbing to a pylon at the top of the ridge (25min).

Here, passing a fallen wire-and-post gate, bear left along a narrow path that winds through the rocks and the dense undergrowth beneath the oaks and conifers, with small ceramic plaques marking the way. Reaching a fence, you pass through a new wire-and-post gate. Beyond the gate the path angles right and descends towards a pylon; a few metres before reaching the pylon cut left and continue along the narrow path that runs past an old limekiln before descending to another gate with GR waymarking.

Limekiln passed on the descent towards Las Casas de la Huerta del Peso
